A temporary residence permit in Ukraine always has an expiration date for the document.
And the question arises, how to extend a residence permit in Ukraine?
There are several options for answering this question.
Let us see, but first, a little theory.
A temporary residence permit is always issued for a specific purpose.
It is also called “the basis for a residence permit.”
For example: marriage, work, study, etc.
1. Extension of a residence permit on the same basis
Let’s take an example:
A foreign citizen has a Ukrainian wife. This is a common occurrence. By marriage, a foreigner received a residence permit in Ukraine for 1 year. After one year, he can renew his residence permit by marriage.
Similarly with other grounds: studying at a university, employment in a company, participation in volunteer organizations, etc.
In this case, the foreigner must apply to the Migration Service no later than 15 working days before the expiration of the residence permit.
Of the documents, he must have a translation of the passport into Ukrainian, a medical insurance policy.
There must also be documents that confirm its foundation:
- marriage certificate
- work permit
- a copy of the order of the rector on enrollment by a student, etc
2. Extension of a residence permit on another basis
A foreign citizen came to Ukraine and entered the university. On the basis of studies, he received a temporary residence permit for the period of study. While studying, he married a Ukrainian. This is a common occurrence. And now the studies are over, and you need to extend the residence permit in Ukraine.
In this case, you need to pay attention that it is possible to extend from one basis to another only in one case – by marriage with a citizen of Ukraine.
That is, a residence permit for study cannot be exchanged for a residence permit for work.
A residence permit for employment in a Ukrainian company cannot be replaced with a residence permit for work in a representative office of a foreign company.
And so with all the reasons. Except marriage with a citizen of Ukraine.
For example, a residence permit for work can be replaced with a residence permit for marriage.
Also, a residence permit for study can be replaced with a residence permit for marriage. And so with all the reasons.
In this case, you need to contact the Migration Service no later than 15 working days before the expiration of the residence permit.
Foreigner must have a translation of a passport into Ukrainian, a medical insurance policy, a marriage certificate, a residence permit in Ukraine, a passport, residence statement in Ukraine.
3. Extension of a residence permit on a basis other than marriage
In this case, you need to hand over your residence permit in Ukraine to the Migration Service. Leave the country.
If a foreigner is a citizen of a country with a visa regime for obtaining a residence permit, you need to obtain a visa.
If with a visa-free, leave and return.
After that, you can apply for a residence permit in Ukraine.
